Informing the airline, airline requirements, travel rules by destination.
Informing the airline
If you plan to fly with an assistance dog, it is essential that you notify your airline in advance.
Airline requirements
- Airlines must accept assistance dogs free of charge.
- Dogs usually sit on the floor in front of the seat. Many airlines seat passengers with guide dogs in the front row for extra space.
- If your dog is too large for this space, the airline may charge for a second seat.
- A safety harness should be taken to secure your dog during take-off and landing.
- Airlines may ask for proof that your dog has been trained to a safe standard for air travel.
Travel rules by destination
- For flights to the EU, your dog must meet the Pet Travel Scheme requirements.
- For non-EU countries, check local quarantine regulations before you travel.
