UK SORA: Available from 23 April 2025
UK SORA (Specific Operations Risk Assessment) replaced the Operating Safety Case (OSC) method as the way to apply for an operational authorisation in the Specific Category from 23 April 2025.
If you want to carry out operations in the Specific Category, you must get an operational authorisation from the CAA.
When you apply for your authorisation, you must provide details of your operational risk assessment and demonstrate that you'll be able to carry out your proposed operations safely and legally.
UK SORA (Specific Operations Risk Assessment) is a method for carrying out a risk assessment of your proposed operations in the Specific Category.
It's the accepted means of applying for a Specific Category operational authorisation in the UK (opens in a new tab).
How to apply
You apply using the UK SORA-based Application Service.
The Application Service provides a structured way for you to provide your risk assessment to us for assessment.
When we assess your application, we'll provide any findings through the Application Service.
When we grant your operational authorisation, you'll be able to view it at the My Operational Authorisations Service.
Authorisations last 12 months
Your operational authorisation will last for 12 months.
You can reapply from 28 days before your authorisation expires.
Transition arrangements for current OSC holders
If you currently hold an OSC-based Operational Authorisation, read our transition arrangements.
