Initial issue of a multi pilot helicopter type rating

Holding a type rating allows you to act as pilot on the type of helicopter specified in the rating.

Please note - If you are the holder of an existing UK issued JAR Flight Crew licence or UK PPL(H), CPL(H) or ATPL(HG) which has not already been converted to a Part-FCL licence, then this licensing action will result in the compulsory conversion of your existing licence to a Part-FCL licence.

This will require an additional application form/information will have to be submitted, and additional requirements may have to be met. As such, please refer to the conversion information available on our website in addition to the information on this page.

Pre-Requisites

• Have a current and valid licence;
• You must complete a training course at an ATO, approved under Part-ORA.

You must:

• have at least 70 hours as PIC on helicopters; and (except when the type rating course is combined with an MCC course)
  • hold a certificate of satisfactory completion of an MCC course in helicopters; or
  • have at least 500 hours as a pilot on multi-pilot aeroplanes; or
  • have at least 500 hours as a pilot in multi-pilot operations on multiengine helicopters.
• Have passed the ATPL(H) theoretical knowledge examinations.
• If you are applying for the first type rating course for a multi-pilot helicopter type as a graduate from an ATP(H)/IR, ATP(H), CPL(H)/IR or CPL(H) integrated course and do not meet the requirement of at least 70 hours as PIC on helicopters the type rating will be issued with the privileges limited to exercising functions as co-pilot only. The limitation shall be removed once you have:
  • completed 70 hours as PIC or pilot-in-command under supervision of helicopters;
  • Passed the multi-pilot skill test on the applicable helicopter type as PIC.

Theoretical Knowledge examinations

These shall be written and comprise at least 100 multiple-choice questions distributed appropriately across the main subjects of the syllabus.

Skills test

You must pass a skill test in accordance with Appendix 9 to Part-FCL to demonstrate the skill required for the safe operation of the applicable type of helicopter.

Please ensure that your examiner has met the designation of examiner for skills test for initial issue of Licences, ratings and certificates and Briefing of Non UK examiners requirements, as detailed in information notice IN 2015/050 and IN 2014/110 if applicable

Additional requirements

• Your medical records must be held by the UK CAA and hold a current and valid PART MED medical certificate appropriate to the level of licence held;
• A current and valid language proficiency level acceptable to the UK CAA.

Validity period

The rating is valid for 1 year from the date when you pass the skills test.

How to apply

Once all of the requirements above have been met, please complete and submit online form.

You will need to upload the following supporting evidence:

• Examiner report form SRG2138
• A copy of your Examiner's licence, medical and authorisation (only if you used a non-UK examiner for the skills test)
• A copy of the EASA simulator approval certificate (only if the Simulator used is not approved by the UK CAA)
• Course Completion Certificate or form SRG1107
• A copy of the EASA ATO Approval Certificate (if the course was completed with a non-UK ATO)
• A certified copy of your licence

UK military pilots need to additionally submit completed form SRG2133

Pilots applying on the basis of holding the type rating on a Third Country ICAO licence will also need to submit the following paperwork:

• Third country verification application SRG2142
• Original or certified copy of valid ICAO licence and medical
• Evidence of currency on type (certified logbooks pages)
