BCAR Section A, A8-10 Approval of Welders require each Welder Approval Holder to renew this approval on a 12 month basis via completion of check examinations. In response to the exceptional circumstances caused by the Covid-19 outbreak, the Civil Aviation Authority ('the CAA'), has varied these requirements on a temporary basis.
The Civil Aviation Authority ('the CAA'), on behalf of the United Kingdom, hereby varies the validity requirements as laid down in CAP 553 BCAR Section A of holders of A8-10 Welder Approvals issued in accordance with Chapter A8-10 para 3.1.2 and para 3.1.1.
For Welder Approvals where the regular check examination requirement is to be completed within 12 months is hereby varied to 16 months. For any CAA issued Welder Approval Certificate, the validity period is extended by 4 months from the date of expiry listed on the certificate.
This policy will expire on 30 November 2020 where all approvals must be renewed with the applicable check examinations carried out and the normal 12 month periodicity restored.
Welders shall prepare and weld appropriate test sample(s) in accordance with BCAR A8-10.
The test sample(s) shall be submitted to a UKAS Accredited Test House for examination together with full particulars of the welder concerned, materials used, details of any post-welding treatment and identification marks on the test sample(s).
Upon receiving from the Test House an Approved Test Certificate indicating successful test results on the sample(s) the welder shall forward the original copy of the Approved Test Certificate to the CAA.

How long will it take for my application to be processed?
The service standard for the issue of a Welders Approval Certificate is ten working days from receipt of a completed application and appropriate fee.
How long is it valid for?
Approvals are valid for one calendar year from the issue date on the test certificate as issued by the UKAS Accredited Test House. The date of issue on the approval certificate is not indicative of the validity of the certificate.

What do I need to include with my application?
- A completed application Form SRG 1742 and the appropriate fee. A single application form can be used to apply for multiple groups
- The original Approved Test Certificate(s), or a true copy certified by your quality manager
- For initial approvals - a true copy of valid photographic ID that has been certified by your quality manager

What happens next?
- The assessment of your application is completed by a Licensing Officer
- Following an acceptable assessment, the Approval is then processed, signed and dispatched to the individual
- In some cases, the certificates may be referred to our Airworthiness department for review
- We will contact you if we have any queries regarding your application and may keep your application pending for 30 working days awaiting any additional documentation to be submitted
- All original Approved Test Certificates will be returned with the approval
