The report covers the CAA’s investigation into, and the development of, practicable Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) based precursors related to Runway Excursions (focusing on Landing Runway Overruns). The investigation was carried out in collaboration with a major UK Operator and the FDM software developer Aerobytes.

The CAA wishes to share its findings and recommendations with industry to facilitate their own efforts to effectively monitor and control this key area of aviation safety through FDM. The information will be of particular interest to Operators who already run FDM programmes and those who plan on implementing one. The project is the first in a series that will address, through FDM precursors of accidents, some of the ‘Significant 7’ areas of risk to UK aviation identified in the CAA’s Safety Plan.
