This report describes a study of ground based noise at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports at night (between 2300 to 0700 hours) commissioned by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR). The study was presented as a series of papers to the Aircraft Noise Monitoring Advisory Committee (ANMAC); this report consolidates those papers. It describes three phases of work, preliminary observations, a Phase 1 pilot study and a Phase 2 study. Options for potential ground noise mitigation measures are suggested and many of these suggestions have already been adopted at the airports.
