Recommendation 2005-06
It is recommended that the Civil Aviation Authority should initiate further studies into ways of improving the
conspicuity of gliders and light aircraft, to include visual and electronic surveillance means, and require the
adoption of measures that are likely to be cost-effective in improving conspicuity.

(e) Software and airborne electronic hardware whose development
errors could directly lead to a failure affecting the operation in such a
way that it can be reasonably expected that a fatality will occur,
must be developed to a standard or means of compliance
acceptable to the CAA.

FLARM is the collision avoidance and Electronic Conspicuity
solution for General Aviation.

As explained in section 2.1.2. of CAP 722,
unmanned aircraft intended for BVLOS operations
will require either:
• A Detect and Avoid (DAA) capability, i.e. a
technical capability which has been accepted as
being at least equivalent to the ability of a pilot
of a manned aircraft to ‘see and avoid’ potential
conflictions;
• A block of airspace to operate in which the
unmanned aircraft is ‘segregated’ from other
aircraft, such as a TDA; or
• Clear evidence that the intended operation will
pose ‘no aviation threat’ and that the safety of
persons and objects on the ground has been
properly addressed
DAA solutions matrix
CAP 1861 describes a matrix of four categories of
technology, which in some combination may form part
of the safety case for BVLOS operations in non-
segregated airspace:
