The Private Pilot Licence (PPL(G)) is available for those wishing to fly gyroplanes.

The licence can only be used on UK-registered gyroplanes inside UK airspace, unless you have an agreement with the aviation authorities in another country which will allow you to fly in that country's airspace.

Your PPL(G) does not require a language proficiency test, however to operate radio telephony equipment you must hold a Flight Radio Telephony Operators Licence.

Full details of requirements for the PPL(G) are available in the CAA publication Standards Document 44, This document also contains details of the requirements for other ratings, certificates and licences that may be obtain for flying gyroplanes.

It is not possible to convert a gyroplane licence to an EASA licence as there is currently no EASA equivalent.

Flying Instructor courses and training for the Commercial Pilot Licence

With effect from 1 October 2019 the CAA has introduced a requirement for any person / training organisation who wishes to offer training towards the CPL(Gyroplanes) or the Flying Instructor (Gyroplanes) to be an Approved Training Organisation.

Any person / training organisation that offered FI courses before this date will have their existing rights protected for a period of 2 years, but must have obtained ATO approval with FIC privileges before 30 September 2021.

Details of how an Instructor / Organisation may obtain Approved Training Organisation status can be found in CAP1667 (Gyroplanes: Criteria for the approval of Non-complex Training Organisations offering training for Commercial Pilots Licences and Flight Instructor Certificates.

Fees payable for ATO status and course approvals can be found in the Personnel Licensing Scheme of Charges.

Organisations wishing to apply for National Approved Training Organisation status must produce an Approved Training Organisation Manual, which covers information on there Operation and procedures, Safety Management System, Compliance Monitoring and a training manual for the courses offered (details in CAP1667, Sections 23 and 24 plus Appendix 1).
