In compliance with FCL.720.A, an applicant for the first type rating course for a multi-pilot aeroplane shall be a student pilot currently undergoing training on an MPL training course or, among other things, hold a certificate of satisfactory completion of an MCC course in aeroplanes.

Specific requirements for the newly-released Enhanced MCC Training to Airline Pilot Standards (APS MCC) Course apply to aeroplanes only and can be found at AMC 2 FCL.735.A “Multi-crew cooperation (MCC) training course – aeroplanes” and associated guidance material.

The requirements for the longer-established Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC) Course as they apply to aeroplanes, can be found at FCL.735.A and associated guidance material.

In addition to the established MCC course, there are three main differences with the APS MCC course.

They are:

  • advanced swept-wing jet aeroplane training;
  • advanced airline operations scenario training;
    and
  • a final assessment.

These add a further 20 hours of training to both the integrated and modular versions of the course.

MCC training may be conducted as part of an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) integrated course or Multi Pilot Licence (MPL) integrated course. Alternatively, MCC training may be combined with Type Rating training (for maximum benefit to the student) or as a standalone modular course.

Graduates of an integrated ATPL or MPL course will have completed MCC or APS MCC training as part of that course. PPL/IR or CPL/IR holders who have not graduated from an integrated course, and who wish to add a first multi-pilot aircraft type rating to their licence, will need to undertake MCC or APS MCC training.

A student pilot who has reached a satisfactory or higher standard at the final assessment of the practical training should be awarded the APS MCC course completion certificate pursuant to AMC2 FCL.735.A.

Alternatively, a student pilot who completes the APS MCC course but does not achieve the APS MCC standard may be awarded the MCC course completion certificate pursuant to AMC1 FCL.735.A., FCL.735.H or FCL.735.As.

APS MCC course approval application process

The application process is likely to involve ATOs submitting to the CAA:

  • site floor plans (for new sites only)
  • a copy of the approval certificate/s of the FSTD/s to be used
  • revised Training Manual to include the new APS MCC course
  • clause-by-clause Gap Analysis document for the organisation to demonstrate where their revised Training Manual, thus course, meets new regulatory requirements
  • completed SRG2116 application form
  • appropriate payment for the addition of a new course to the organisation's approval certificate
    (as per the CAA's Scheme of Charges)
  • after approval, the APS MCC course will be subject to the CAA's normal regulatory oversight
