The role of a RAE(F) is to assess the flightworthiness of a UAS in support of a SAIL Mark application as per CAP722K (opens in a new tab).

The flow chart below shows the various steps that a designer should undertake to have their UAS assessed by a RAE(F).

Any UAS designer intending to obtain a SAIL Mark Certificate for their UAS should use CAP722K for guidance and applicable requirements.

Steps required when applying for a SAIL mark via an RAE(F)

Using a RAE(F) when applying for a SAIL Mark (description of diagram)

Step 1: UAS Designer identifies parameters for intended operation.

Step 2: UAS Designer identifies SAIL level, any mitigations claimed and containment requirements.

Step 3: UAS Designer seeks services of RAE(F).

Step 4: UAS Designer and RAE(F) agree requirements to assess.

Step 5: RAE(F) assesses evidence.

Step 6: RAE(F) issues flightworthiness report to CAA and UAS Designer.

Step 7: CAA issues SAIL Mark Certificate to UAS Designer.

Step 8: UAS Designer produces UAS to specified configuration.

Step 9: UAS Designer informs CAA of each serial number that pertains to the SAIL Mark Certificate.
