UK Civil Aviation Regulations

These are published by the CAA on our UK Regulations pages. EU Regulations and EASA Access Guides published by EASA no longer apply in the UK. Our website and publications are being reviewed to update all references. Any references to EU law and EASA Access guides should be disregarded and where applicable the equivalent UK versions referred to instead.

The latest summit of the World Economic Forum's (WEF), Drone Innovators Network, was hosted by the Japanese Government in Tokyo. This was a fantastic opportunity for regulators to get together with innovators from across the globe. This meeting focused primarily on how to move into enabling more complex, innovative operations primarily, drone delivery and Urban Air Mobility (UAM).

I was really pleased to sit on a discussion panel on the future of regulation with colleagues from the US and Japanese regulators and Airbus. This gave me the chance to present on the UK's vision for the future of mobility, set out in the industrial strategy, and how the CAA's new Innovation Hub will answer the challenge for more agile regulation. Questions focused on scalability of regulatory resources, assurance models for innovative technologies (particularly in the area of artificial intelligence and automation) and how practical demonstrators, like drone delivery trials in Rwanda, Switzerland and Japan, can help regulators develop regulatory responses.

The network has already delivered some key work including a toolkit of best practices, developed with support from the aviation regulators of Switzerland and Rwanda. While the next set of work is still to be confirmed it seems likely that it will focus on helping advance future regulations through trials and technical demonstrations. The CAA is looking forward to expanding our knowledge base through closer working with industry and hopefully sharing our insights with the rest of the world.
