This is background information related to air quality. View our latest analysis.
In the UK, poor air quality is the largest environmental risk to public health. It also has the potential to negatively impact flora and fauna. Air pollution is transboundary in nature, meaning that pollutants from sometimes hundreds of miles away can impact upon the air quality in any specific area. Around airports, air quality is mainly affected by emissions from aircraft, aircraft support vehicles, airport terminal generators and traffic on local roads. Given the number of potential sources, managing air quality around airports requires a number of environmental protection measures and a coordinated approach across many different actors and bodies.
