CAP 1747 reports on research into establishing the optimum means of alerting helicopter flight crews to Class A Helicopter Terrain Awareness and Warning System (HTAWS) alerts, complementing the development work on Class A HTAWS alert envelopes reported in CAP 1538 and CAP 1519 and addressing AAIB Safety Recommendations 2016-11 and 2016-12. The research comprised: a review of the literature on auditory, visual and tactile alerting; an assessment of existing HTAWS alerting strategies including a review of pilot experience; the development and testing of new auditory HTAWS alerts; an investigation into the optimum level for the presentation of auditory alerts. This work will be input to EUROCAE WG110 for consideration in the development new Minimum Operational Performance Standards (MOPS) for HTAWS for offshore helicopter operations.
