    Please note that, in the event of UK participation in EASA and mutual recognition of licences and certificates ceasing, some CAA website content and application forms may continue to carry the EASA logo or reference the EU or EASA rather than the UK CAA in the short term. 

    These will be updated in due course following the outcome of the transition period negotiations on the long-term aviation relationship between the UK and the EU.  In the meantime, the guidance provided and the application forms accessed via the CAA website portal will continue to be valid.

  • Pre-Requisites

    You must hold an existing Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance Licence and have met the relevant knowledge and experience requirements to extend to include another Category/Sub-Category.

    If your experience has been gained in an EASA 145 Maintenance Organisation but an overseas company, original logbooks/worksheets and examination certificates will be required.

    If your experience has been gained outside an EASA 145 Maintenance Organisation then you will be unable to proceed with your application at this present time. If you require more information or guidance on what to do next please email eldweb@caa.co.uk.

    When extending the Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance Licence you are required to complete the relevant modules applicable to the Category/Sub-Category you are applying for (for information on the modules/part modules you will need to email eldweb@caa.co.uk).

    The EU/EASA Certificates of Recognition (CofR) would continue to be acceptable until 30 December 2022 for inclusion on an UK Part-66 licence in certain circumstances:

    • C of Rs issued prior to 31 Dec 2020 – acceptable.

    • C of Rs issued after 31 Dec 2020 by EU/EASA training organisations whose:

    • Organisation Approval Certificate (EASA Form 11) was issued before 31 December 2020
    • Organisation Approval Certificate (EASA Form 11) was issued/amended after 31 December 2020 - not acceptable

    The EU/EASA Organisation approval certificate valid at the time the course was completed along with the CofRs must be submitted to support applications.

    You will be required to provide the minimum civil aircraft maintenance experience requirement appropriate to the additional Category/Sub-Category of licence applied for as defined in Commission Regulation UK (EU) No 1149/2011, Appendix IV. This experience can be documented in the form of a logbook and/or worksheets ensuring the tasks have been signed off by the appropriate signatory.

    The experience requirement will be reduced by 50% if you have completed an approved Part 147 basic training course relevant to the Category/Sub-Category applied for.

    The recommendation document will need to be completed by a Quality Manager or the immediate senior person within the Quality Department of your current employer, or the organisation where the experience is gained.

    NB: If you are applying for a change of name and/or nationality you will be required to supply evidence in support of your request, e.g. change of name deed poll/marriage certificate/valid passport.

  • How much does it cost?

    • £340.00 per Category/Sub-Category applied for

    If you are applying for any other additional services the appropriate fee will also apply.

    An additional fee will be payable if you wish your documents to be returned by secure courier.

    Applications and documents posted from outside the European Union

    When submitting applications or documentation via post/courier to the UK please ensure that you complete the import declaration on any package in the correct manner.

    Please ensure that you enter the “Value” of the package content as zero/nil. Otherwise this will generate import duties in the UK which will be re-charged to you.”

    While there is a fee for the CAA application process, this does not represent an importation value of the package content. Therefore the application fee should not be stated on the import declaration form that a candidate completes when posting supporting documents to CAA UK.

    Refunds – rejected or withdrawn applications

    There have been a number of applications received from AML applicants applying for issue of an AML or for additional privileges to be added to an existing AML which have been rejected by the CAA due to, for example, lack of experience criteria. This has resulted in the CAA refunding 100% of the application charge paid even though CAA time has been incurred to review the application in order to reach the rejection decision.

    The CAA is required to recover its costs from those that have caused those costs to be incurred. Therefore, for applications received from 15 September 2016, the CAA will deduct £181 to recover the average costs of its application review, in respect of those applications that the CAA has rejected or where the applicant has withdrawn his/her application before the CAA has completed its review.

    This deduction is associated with applications in respect of AML activities under the UK Official Record Series 5 No. 334, Personnel Licensing Scheme of Charges, para. 13.1 table 61 refs. a, c i), d and/or e. This action is in line with the CAA Charges Waiver and Refund Policy.

  • Same day services

    Same day, special delivery and other customised services are available at an additional cost. This service is on request, which should be made at the time of initial application. Documents are worked to a same day turnaround from receipt of customer request by 11:00 to completion of the processing of the application by 16:30 on the same working day. The customer will be able to collect the documents by 16:30 on the same day or the documents shall be sent by Royal Mail special delivery, where this is included in the service.

    How long is it valid for?

    • The UK Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance Licence is valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
  • The following people can act as certifiers for all documents:

    • Postholders of a Part 145/147/MF/MG/CAMO/CAO Organisation or another Part-66 licence holder

    The following people can act as certifiers for ID Documents (Passport or full UK driving licence):

    • Postholders of a Part 145/147/MF/MG/CAMO/CAO Organisation or another Part-66 licence holder.
    • Official bodies such as the post office or solicitors who provide this service.

    Instructions for the certifier of your ID document are as follows:

    • Insert on the copy to be enclosed with the application: 'I have seen the original document and I certify that this is a complete and accurate copy of the original'.
    • Insert signature and date
    • Certifier's name must be printed in block capitals
    • Must include position or capacity, e.g. Head of a Part 145/147 Organisation.

    • Application for Initial Issue, Amendment or Renewal of an Engineer Licence (Form 19). 
    • For existing licence holders your original Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance licence will need to be submitted with any application for amendment or renewal of an engineer's licence.
    • Certified true copies of the appropriate Exam Certificates completed for the additional category/sub-category applied for. 
    • The EU/EASA Organisation approval certificate valid at the time the course was completed.
    • Certified true copies of the logbook/worksheets showing the evidence of the practical maintenance experience gained.
    • The Recommendation attachment ensuring that it has been completed by your Quality Manager in support of your application. The recommendation can also be completed by: Part 145, Part M Subpart F, FAR 145, CAMO, UK Part 66 Engineering licence holder.
    • If applying for change of name and or nationality a certified true copy of the supporting document e.g your valid passport/change of name deed poll/marriage certificate.

    From 28 September 2012, where practical experience is gained outside of a Part-145 or Part-M approved maintenance organisation, the applicant is required to submit confirmation from the National Authority responsible for the maintenance organisation concerned, that the organisation is approved under the national regulation for the maintenance activities stated and that the signatory in Form 19 is a member of that maintenance organisation.

    • The assessment of your application is completed by a Licensing Officer and technical standards surveyor.
    • Following an acceptable assessment the Licence is then processed, signed and dispatched to the individual.
    • We will contact you if we have any queries regarding your application and may keep your application pending for 30 working days awaiting any additional documentation to be submitted.
    • A refund fee may be charged if the assessment results in the rejection of your application.  This will also be applied if you choose to cancel your application.
