The UK recognises the important role that safety culture plays in the effective management of safety at all levels. In this respect, the State Safety Board (SSB) supports a positive safety culture throughout the aviation industry via safety promotion activities and the application of a just culture.
The CAA monitors the safety culture of its staff through a series of self-assessments overseen by the business assurance section. It has also trained all staff involved in oversight activities on just culture and its application.
The CAA applies a just culture approach as part of its mandatory occurrence reporting system as well as during surveillance activities. This provides protection and confidentiality to anyone that reports a safety issue.
Safety culture within the Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories is covered in their respective state safety programmes, further information can be found in the SSP stakeholders section.
The MAA promotes safety culture by assuring compliance with Regulatory Article 1200 – Defence Air Safety Management and assessing the culture through continual engagement. The MAA also delivers appropriate training through the Centre of Air Safety Training and the Safety Training for Error Prevention programme.
