UK Civil Aviation Authority announces members of its new Environmental Sustainability Panel

The UK Civil Aviation Authority is today (27 June) announcing the appointment of eight members of its new Environmental Sustainability Panel to act as a ‘critical friend’ to the Civil Aviation Authority, providing expert technical advice on the delivery of our environmental sustainability strategy.   

The Panel will work with us to support and challenge us as we work with industry, consumers and local communities to better understand and mitigate the impacts of aviation and drive improvements in its environmental performance relating to emissions, noise and other environmental impacts. It will work alongside our existing Consumer Panel to better understand consumers’ needs as we develop our plans to report on aviation’s environmental performance and to provide consistent information to passengers on this when they book their flights.

Richard Moriarty , Chief Executive of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said “I am delighted to welcome the new Environmental Sustainability Panel to the CAA to help us achieve our strategic goal of helping the aviation sector to continue to thrive while still achieving the government’s target to meet net zero by 2050 and reducing its impact on local communities.  The Panel brings a wealth of expertise in aviation, and in other sectors, on noise, carbon and other environmental impacts, covering both the technical challenges and solutions for greening aviation, and the impact of emissions and noise on public health. 

Dr Ruth Mallors-Ray, the Chair of the Environmental Sustainability Panel said “I am very pleased to be appointed Chair of the CAA’s inaugural Environmental Sustainability Panel. Aviation is transforming at a rapid rate and its impact on the environment through emissions and noise has to be understood and mitigated by all aviation stakeholders, as well as being reported clearly to consumers and local communities. Convening a panel of experts in their fields to act as advisor and critical friend to the CAA is recognition by the CAA of its commitment to playing its role in how aviation becomes a cleaner, greener and quieter sector.
