The UK has committed to deliver Beyond Visual Line Of Sight Operations (BVLOS) for unmanned aircraft as part of the Government's Future of Flight Action Plan.

Our Airspace Modernisation Strategy includes the provision of services to new users, such as unmanned aircraft, to enable routine Beyond Visual Line of Sight Operations (BVLOS) and the vision for a replacement for Lower Airspace Radar Services (LARS), based on co-operative surveillance. The integration of airspace users into UK airspace will require the development of new traffic management services, alongside the use of existing Air Traffic Management solutions.

As part of our development of policy in this area the CAA needs to gain an in-depth understanding of the current industry capability and future planned developments; and are seeking input to help shape the future of ground-based airspace surveillance and communication infrastructure to support airspace modernisation and unmanned aircraft operate beyond visual line of sight.

As part of this work, we are conducting a short survey to gather valuable insights on the current state and future needs of Electronic Conspicuity (EC) Ground Infrastructure, including:

  • ADS-B transceivers
  • Multilateration (MLAT) solutions
  • Flight Information Displays (FIDs)
  • Drone Optical,
  • Acoustic and Radio Frequency detection
  • Traffic Information Service Broadcast (TIS-B) / Flight Information Service Broadcast (FIS-B) solutions
  • Ground obstruction beacons

We are also keen to hear from organisations specialising in connectivity solutions (including Local and Wide Area Networks or VPN) and data encryption in the aviation / air traffic arena. Your input can directly contribute to our work in this area.
