Lower Airspace Radar Service

What is LARS

A Lower Airspace Radar Service (LARS) is a free service available to all aircraft for the provision of the radar element of UK Flight Information Services (UK FIS). This is usually available within approximately 30 nm of each participating Air Traffic Service (ATS) Unit to all aircraft flying outside controlled airspace up to FL100, within the limits of radar/radio cover.

A list of participating units and times of availability can be found in the UK Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) section ENR 1.6 (available on the NATS Aeronautical Information Service (AIS) website).

Whilst designed for the provision of a flight information service, LARS units may (subject to workload) provide a Basic Service to transiting aircraft.

Periodic reviews of LARS service provision are conducted in accordance with Department for Transport requirements, and these reports can be found below.

Information to LARS providers

LARS units are required to complete and submit monthly statistical returns to CAA Airspace Regulation. Please contact Airspace Regulation for the LARS Return form template.
