This month 47 hot-air balloons took part in the Lord Mayor's Hot Air Balloon Regatta 2016 across London.
Representatives from our General Aviation Unit were present to ensure all balloons were operated safely and legally over one of the most congested areas of the UK.
The charity event first took place in June last year. This year's regatta started from Burgess Park, Camberwell at around 5am. The balloons then tracked over Surrey Quays tube station, the O2 arena, City Airport (which was closed as usual on a Sunday morning), Dagenham, Upminster and the M25. Most balloons landed on private farmland between Upminster and Billericay.
As well as ensuring the observance of low flying rules, we also attended a planning meeting in the lead-up to the event and provided a safety briefing to pilots on the day. Our involvement was well-received by participants and helped to make sure the event was both legal and safe - as well as being spectacular for those watching across the capital.
Other GA events that we are attending this year include the Bristol Balloon Fiesta on 11-14 August.
You can also find guidance on our site for operating permissions for balloons and approvals for displays or events.
