Safety Sense leaflets

Key safety information for GA pilots.

Our suite of Safety Sense leaflets cover a range of subjects from winter flying to balloon airmanship. Following the success of the Skyway Code, in 2021 we began a revised series that reflects the latest guidance and best practice for General Aviation pilots.

The latest leaflets cover pilot health, mountain flying, carbon monoxide safety and flying with passengers.

Subscribe to our SkyWise alerts to be notified when we publish a new leaflet.

Enquiries regarding the content of these publications should be addressed to: GA@caa.co.uk, using the subject line 'Safety Sense'.

Safety Sense Leaflet 36: Autopilots and Electric Trim

This new Safety Sense Leaflet highlights the safe use of autopilot and electric trim systems in GA aircraft, including the management of trim runaway events, which have contributed to several fatal accidents.

It emphasises system knowledge, correct operation, pilot familiarisation, and occurrence reporting to help manage associated risks.
