Making a Report to the CAA

How to report an aviation-related or air travel-related incident or problem.

Whistleblowing - The CAA is a “prescribed person” under the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 for the purpose of receiving “protected disclosures” (whistleblowing) from the civil aviation industry.  As such, the CAA is directly responsible for investigating any information of this nature that is received.  A “worker” (which definition includes employees, independent contractors, agency workers and trainees) may make a complaint to the Employment Tribunal if he or she suffers a detriment as a result of making a “protected disclosure”.  An employee will be regarded as having been unfairly dismissed if the reason or principal reason for their dismissal is the making of a protected disclosure.  Read the CAA Whistleblowing Statement.

Accidents and Serious Incidents  - to aircraft should be reported to the Air Accident Investigation Branch(AAIB) which is part of the Department for Transport - (01252 510300)  www.aaib.gov.uk

Airline Consumer Issues - the Air Transport Users Council (AUC) is the UK's consumer watchdog for the aviation industry (02072 406061)  www.auc.org.uk

Airprox - Near misses and similar incidents are investigated and recorded by the UK Airprox Board (UKAB) www.airproxboard.org.uk

Alleged Breach of Air Navigation Legislation (Including incidents such as perceived low flying) - CAA Aviation Regulation Enforcement, CAA, K504 CAA House 0207 453 6193 (During office hours). Please print the Complaint Form, complete it and post or fax it to 0207 453 6175.

ATOLs - for perceived problems with ATOL holders or the ATOL (Air Travel Organisers' Licensing) system itself  www.caa.co.uk/ATOL

Mandatory Occurrence Reporting Scheme (MORS) - the scheme aims to contribute to the improvement of aviation safety by ensuring that relevant safety information is reported, collected, stored, protected and disseminated.
