Noise Monitoring

The collection and analysis of aircraft noise, flight path and other operational data.

Much of ERCD's noise monitoring work is undertaken on behalf of the DfT's Aircraft Noise Monitoring Advisory Committee (ANMAC). ANMAC advises the Government on policy relating to aircraft noise at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted.  The work involves the collection and analysis of aircraft noise, flight path and other operational data.

Recent tasks carried out for ANMAC have included the provision of data in support of a review of the aircraft noise limits around airports, and the assessment of night-time community noise intrusion caused by ground activities at airports.

At Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, routine noise and flight path monitoring is carried out continuously by the airports' Noise and Track Keeping (NTK) Systems.  ERCD obtains data from the systems via its own workstations.  In return, it provides specialist technical advice on NTK system enhancements.

For specialist projects, ERCD also uses its own noise monitoring equipment to measure and record aircraft noise levels.

Noise Monitoring Equipment

Although ERCD obtains the majority of its noise data via the BAA London airports' Noise and Track Keeping (NTK) system, it also has its own extensive range of professional noise monitoring equipment.
