Noise effects research
Since the first UK social survey of aircraft noise annoyance was conducted at Heathrow in 1961, ERCD has undertaken many investigations into the extent and magnitude of community annoyance caused by aircraft noise. These have focused on the problems related to general aviation and helicopters as well as large civil aircraft.
Research has also included substantial studies into the impact of aircraft noise on sleep disturbance. The results of both the annoyance and sleep research studies have been taken into account by the DfT in the formulation of various governmental noise control policies and measures.
