What does the ‘A’ in the dBA unit mean?
The ‘A’ refers to what is known as the ‘A weighting’. This weighting is applied to the electrical signal within a noise-measuring instrument as a way of simulating the way the human ear responds to a range of acoustic frequencies. The A weighting is commonly used in aircraft noise measurement and in measurements of many other types of environmental noise.
