Will there be a transition period when the new rules come into effect?

The new rules are due to come into effect on 1 January 2014 and there will be a transition period following that date to allow aerodromes to convert to the new EASA certificate and to allow the national Authorities to accomplish the conversion of all aerodromes within EASA scope within the transition period. All of the EASA aerodromes must have converted from the UK aerodrome licence to the EASA certificate by the end of the transition period. The precise details of the conversion process and transition period are still under discussion. Existing national certificates will still be valid during the transition period until the new EASA certificate is issued. The EASA requirements and processes should be known about a year in advance which should allow aerodromes and the CAA adequate time to plan for the changes before the implementation date. The CAA will work with aerodromes to ensure that all parties understand what is required to transition from the national licence to the EASA certificate, within the transition period.

Early indications are that the transition period is likely to be 48 months (4 years).
