The CAA has a sustainability objective as part of its five-year Strategic Plan to ‘To improve environmental performance through more efficient use of airspace and make an efficient contribution to reducing the aviation industry’s environmental impacts.’
The aviation industry needs to continue to address its contribution to climate change if the industry is to have long-term sustainability.
Our specific current aims are to:
- Support a reduction in aviation emissions through more efficient use of UK airspace.
- Enable consumers to make decisions that take account of the environmental impact of their air travel arrangements and inform the wider public on aviation’s environmental performance.
- Engage with Government, providing expert advice to help develop environmental policy, to help implement the EU ETS and to establish the CAA’s environmental remit.
- Engage with stakeholders to identify and support initiatives that may yield environmental performance improvements, where the CAA can play a useful, value-adding role, and do so efficiently.
These aims support our four goals for the CAA's environment programme.
Recent progress
Following a public consultation in early 2012 CAA has launched a four-year programme to help improve aviation's environmental performance and allow the sector to grow sustainably. CAA and the Environment sets out the CAA's activities over the next four years to facilitate, advise, influence and regulate the aviation sector so its environmental impacts can be reduced:

Environment Panel
The CAA has set up an Environment Panel to assist the CAA in meeting its strategic environmental objective. The Environment Panel will provide external review, advice and challenge to the CAA in meeting the objectives of its environmental programme. The Panel will meet twice a year and consist of seven experts representing a range of stakeholder organisations.
