Flight Inspection

This page provides details of the CAA's requirement for Flight Inspection of Navigation Aids. The requirements are specified for both Air Traffic Service Providers and Flight Inspection Organisations.

The Flight Inspection requirements applicable to an ATS provider are contained in CAP 670 ATS Safety Requirements Part C, Section 2, Navigation:  

  • ILS 02 Flight Inspection Requirements
  • MLS 02 Microwave Landing System (MLS) Flight and Ground Inspection Requirements
  • NAV 02 Engineering Requirements for MF Non-Directional Beacons
  • NAV 03 VHF Omnidirectional Range (VOR) Flight Inspection Types and Requirements
  • NAV 06 Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) Flight Inspection Types and Requirements.

Article 205 (5) of the Air Navigation Order 2009 (as amended) permits the UK CAA to include a condition on an Article 205 approval requiring that the equipment be flight checked by an approved person.

Flight Inspection Organisations are subject to Approval under Article 205(6) of the Air Navigation Order 2009 (as amended). CAP 670 ATS Safety Requirements Part C, Section 2, Navigation FLI 02 provides details of requirements and approval procedures. To be approved as a Flight Inspection Organisation, or to vary an existing Flight Inspection Organisation Approval, Form SRG 1420 Application for Approval as a Flight Inspection Organisation will need to be completed and returned to the CAA.
