Class and Type Ratings

Guidance for applicants

The privileges of the holder of a class or type rating are to act as pilot on the class or type of aircraft as specified in the rating.

Further details of specific requirements can be found in CAP804 Part H.

Pre-requisites

This will vary depending on licence held.

Cost

The fee that you need to pay will depend on your circumstances; for example:

  • whether you already hold a UK licence, and whether that licence has already been converted to an EASA-FCL licence
  • whether your application will be made at the same time as applying for something else.

Processing time

We endeavour to process applications within 10 working days from receipt. 

Validity period

Rating validity is for a minimum of 12 months from the date of the flight test (if applicable).  Rating validity period may vary, please refer to the specific rating for further information.

What to expect

A desk based assessment from a Flight Crew Licensing Officer or Assistant.

Following an acceptable assessment your licensing application will be processed signed and despatched

  • We will contact you if we have any queries regarding your application and may keep your application pending whilst any additional requirements are met.
  • An assessment and refund fee may be charged if the assessment results in the rejection of your application. This will also be applied if you choose cancel your application.

In some circumstances an applicant for a conversion of an existing licence to an EASA licence may also require a national licence to fly Annexe II aircraft (Aircraft not on the EASA Type List). This process is undertaken by the Licensing Officer who assesses your application.
