Private Pilots Licence (PPL)

Guidance for applicants

The holder of this licence may act without remuneration as Pilot in Command or co-pilot on various different types of aircraft dependent on what the licence is for in non-commercial operations.

Pre-requisites

You must be at least 17 years of age.

Details of specific requirements can be found in CAP 804 under the following sections:

  • Aeroplanes section 4 part C subpart 1
  • Helicopter refer to section 4 part C subpart 2
  • Airships refer to section 4 part c subpart 3

If you are the holder of an existing UK issued Flight Crew licence which has not already been converted to a Part-FCL licence, then this licensing action is likely to result in the compulsory conversion of your existing licence to a Part-FCL licence, for which an additional application form/information will have to be submitted, and additional requirements may have to be met. As such, please refer to the conversion information available on our website in addition to the information on this page.

Cost

The fee that you need to pay will depend on your circumstances; for example:

  • whether you already hold a UK licence, and whether that licence has already been converted to an EASA-FCL licence
  • whether your application will be made at the same time as applying for something else.

To assist in the interpretation of the scheme of charges a Fee Calculator has been developed, which derives the fee for this application type for your particular circumstances.

Processing time

We endeavour to process applications in 10 working days from date of receipt.

Validity period

EASA-FCL licences have no expiry date and are therefore valid for the holder's lifetime.
