Application and guidance information associated with Type Rating Examiners and Synthetic Flight Examiners

The  requirements and procedures associated with the appointment of Type Rating Examiners (TREs) or Synthetic Flight Examiners (SFEs) are detailed within CAA Standards Documents.

Applying for TRE/SFE Authorisation

CAA Form SRG3102, together with the appropriate fee, should be sent to the Flight Operations Inspectorate (Training Standards). Details of the costs can be found in the CAA Scheme of Charges - Personnel Licensing.

Crew Resource Management Instructor (CRMI)

All TREs are required to be CRMIs and will be assessed at the time of their TRI/TRE observation or re-validation. There is no additional fee and no additional documents are produced. An entry will be made on the TRE Authorisation.

Applying for Re-validation/Renewal

For application, the sponsoring company should send CAA Form TS03, together with the appropriate fee, to the Flight Operations Inspectorate (Training Standards). Details of costs can be found in the CAA Scheme of Charges - Personnel Licensing.

The CAA requires that the sponsoring company apply for revalidation/renewal of a TRE during the 12 months prior to expiry.


TRE Standardisation Course

Operators and/or companies may decide to run their own internal TRE Standardisation Course and to do so the requirements in CAA Standards Document 41 should be complied with.

Applying for the Approval of a TRE Standardisation Course

CAA Form TRE01, together with the appropriate fee, should then be sent to the Flight Operations Inspectorate (Training Standards). Details of costs can be found in the CAA Scheme of Charges - Personnel Licensing.

Registration of Chief Tutor and Tutors

CAA Form TRE04, together with the appropriate fee, should be sent to the Flight Operations Inspectorate (Training Standards). Details of costs can be found in the CAA Scheme of Charges - Personnel Licensing.
