Navigation Approvals

Information regarding the various navigation approvals available

The webpages listed in the menu bar or linked below contain further information regarding the navigation approval specified.

Explained are the regulations and requirements relating to each approval.

Links to the relevant application forms and guidance information have also been provided.

RVSM - Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum

Approval allows aircraft to fly with a vertical separation of 1000 feet between FL290 and FL410 inclusive.

MNPS - Minimum Navigation Performance Specification

Approval permits flight within MNPS designated airspace in the North Atlantic.  MNPS airspace is being renamed NAT High Level Airspace with effect from February 2016.  The MNPS navigation specification is being replaced with a RNAV-10 or RNP-4.

RNAV10 (RNP10 Required Navigation Performance) and RNP-4

Approval permits flight within RNP-10 / RNP-4 designated oceanic and remote airspace.

Applying for Approval - RVSM, MNPS, RNP-10 and RNP-4

CAA Form CA4040, together with the appropriate fee, should be sent to the Shared Services Centre. Details of costs can be found in the CAA Scheme of Charges - General Aviation.

ETOPS (Extended Range Twin Operations)

Approval permits twin-engined aeroplanes to operate over a route that contains a point further than one hours flying time away from an adequate aerodrome.

RNAV5 (B-RNAV - Basic Area Navigation)

Approval allows aircraft to navigate at FL95 and above without the use of point source navigation aids.

RNAV1 (P-RNAV - Precision Area Navigation) and RNP-1

RNAV-1 and RNP-1 approvals are for Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs), Standard terminal arrival routings (STARs) and missed approach.  Acceptable means of compliance are provided in EASA AMC 20.

RNP Approach Operations

RNP APCH is charted as RNAV (GNSS) Approach Operations.  A minima line is provided for each of the following types of approaches:

RNP approach LNAV and LNAV/VNAV (APV Baro)

Non precision approaches to LNAV minima and APV approaches to LNAV / VNAV minima are addressed in  AMC 20-27.

RNP approach LPV (APV SBAS) (Localiser Performance with Vertical guidance)

APV approaches to LPV minima are addressed in AMC 20-28.

RNP AR approach

RNP AR criteria have been developed to support RNP operations to RNP minima using RNP less than or equal to 0.3 NM or radius to fix (RF) turns.  Acceptable means of compliance for RNP AR are provided in EASA AMC 20-26.
Each RNP AR approach requires an individual special approval.
