The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) states that "Noise certification shall be granted or validated by the State of Registry of an aircraft on the basis of satisfactory evidence that the aircraft complies with the requirements which are at least equal to the applicable Standards specified in this Annex".

The CAA discharges its responsibilities regarding ICAO requirements through the Aeroplane Noise Regulations 1999, the Aeroplane Noise (Amendment) Regulations 1999 and the Air Navigation (Environmental Standards for Non-EASA Aircraft) Order 2008.

Not every aircraft on the UK Register is obliged to have a Noise Certificate. Vintage aircraft and, with the exception of microlights, Permit to Fly aircraft, are exempt.

Applying For a New, Revised or Duplicate Noise Certificate

Certificates of Airworthiness (CofAs)
Upon application for the issue of a CofA, Applications and Approvals will automatically make assessment for the issue of a Noise Certificate.

UK Registered Aircraft (except Microlights)
To apply for a Noise Certificate outside of an application for a CofA, CAA Form SRG 1702 Should be sent to Applications and Approvals along with the appropriate fee in accordance with the CAA Scheme of Charges ORS5.

Microlights 
CAA Form SRG 1703 should be sent to the Applications and Approvals along with the appropriate fee in accordance with the CAA Scheme of Charges ORS5.

A charge will be made for carrying out noise tests on airframe/engine/propeller combinations that do not have defined noise levels. This charge will be applied to all applications where a noise test is necessary, only applications on CAA Form SRG 1703 will be accepted.

Please note that aircraft which are not legally required to have a Noise Certificate will only be issued with a Noise Certificate if certification data is available for its particular configuration.
