The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA), in the frame of the UK/Ireland Functional Airspace Block, have approved a joint policy on Performance-based Navigation (PBN)
to be implemented across UK and Irish airspace.
The publication of the policy is a significant step towards enabling PBN in-line with ICAO recommendations and ahead of any SES legislation. It also forms an essential part of the CAA’s Future Airspace Strategy
and FAS Implementation Plan.
UK PBN Implementation Plan
The CAA is working with NATS and industry to develop a UK PBN Implementation Plan in the form of an Aeronautical Information Circular (AIC). The AIC will detail the options available to airspace designers and airports in the next 5-8 years, based on surveyed aircraft capabilities and assumptions of future equipage. The AIC is intended to convey how the CAA envisages the available navigation applications being mapped to future airspace structures in-line with the FAS Implementation Plan. It will serve as a pre-cursor to the plan announced by the European Commission to develop Single European Sky (SES) legislation through a proposed PBN Implementing Rule in the 2018 -2020 timeframe.
