Operating a Balloon

An operator of a balloon operating on a UK AOC(B) is subject to regular audit by the CAA. The British Balloon and Airship Club (BBAC) will also inspect all balloons holding a Certificate of Airworthiness.

The type of license required for the operation of a balloon is dependent on the purpose of intended operations:

Private Usage- a balloon Private Pilot Licence will be required.

Commercial activity- public transport- an AOC(B) and a full Commercial Pilot’s Licence will be required.

Commercial activity- aerial work- a restricted or a full Commercial Pilot’s License will be required.

 


 

In accordance with the Air Navigation Order, Balloon flight for the purpose of public transport activity requires the operator to hold an Air Operator Certificate (AOC)

Applying for a balloon AOC

CAA Form SRG 1310, together with the appropriate fee, should be sent to the Flight Operations Inspectorate (General Aviation). Details of costs can be found in the CAA Scheme of Charges - Air Operator and Police Air Operator Certificates.

Applying for a balloon AOC Variation

CAA Form SRG 1311, together with the appropriate fee, should be sent to the Flight Operations Inspectorate (General Aviation). Details of costs can be found in the CAA Scheme of Charges - Air Operator and Police Air Operator Certificates.

Applying for a balloon AOC Renewal

CAA Form SRG 1312, together with the appropriate fee, should be sent to the Flight Operations Inspectorate (General Aviation). Details of costs can be found in the CAA Scheme of Charges - Air Operator and Police Air Operator Certificates.

Annual Return of operating data

If a full CAA audit has not been undertaken within the preceding 12 months, the information requested on CAA Form SRG 1316 will be required for the AOC(B) renewal.
