An important new initiative is getting under way that forms part of the CAA’s on-going consumer and travel trade awareness and compliance work.
This initiative aims to focus on consumers and travel agents in the provincial metropolitan areas and we are particularly interested at looking at those that serve the British Asian community. This is because some of these travel agents may not be fully aware of the changes to the ATOL scheme last year, and we have seen situations where consumers have lost out in recent failures because some travel agents have not booked customers correctly.
The CAA’s initiative is a joint venture with local authorities’ Trading Standards and our pilot has just started in the city of Leicester which comprises of two phases. The first is a consumer campaign at local community level so that people know what to ask for when booking flights, and how to check they are covered.
To give you a flavour of the consumer campaign we have included examples of the material that is being distributed to local communities and the media.
The second phase is to contact travel agents in the area explaining the importance of protecting consumers, how the ATOL scheme works and an easy steps guide to check that they are trading correctly. This will be followed up by visits to travel agents in the area.
Once the pilot is complete further projects will be planned for other cities during 2014.
