Initial JAR Class 1 (Professional Pilot) Medical Examination

How to gain a JAR Class 1 medical certificate

Initial JAR Class 1 (Professional pilot) Medical Examination

You should be fit, have good eyesight and hearing, and have no current or previous illness which might interfere with the safe exercise of a commercial or airline transport pilot’s licence.

The initial medical examination must be done at the UK CAA Aeromedical Centre (AMC) at Gatwick (see address below). The whole examination takes half a day.  The cost can be seen on our current scheme of charges and is payable in advance.  To make an appointment please contact our Call Centre on +44 (0)1293 573700, select option 1, then option 1 again for appointments.  Please note that appointments for medicals, consultant reviews and investigations cannot be made via e-mail.

Some of these tests have to be reported by external consultants and the results are then gathered together. The medical officer doing your physical examination should be able to tell you whether all seems normal. Once the results are collated, and are satisfactory, your medical certificate will be issued.  Often this is possible on the same day as your initial examination.

If you require further advice about a pre-existing condition please write to the Medical Department at the address below, including a report from your treating doctor, if possible.

NB - Please note that for reasons of medical confidentiality, we do not give personal medical advice by e-mail.
