Environmental Factors

The Work of the Environmental Research and Consultancy Department (ERCD)

In the United Kingdom, government policy on the control of aircraft noise is the responsibility of the Department for Transport (DfT). ERCD provides technical support on aircraft noise matters to the DfT. ERCD also provides similar services to other organisations including airport operators and local planning authorities.

ERCD has been involved with aircraft noise issues for more than 40 years during which time it has made many significant contributions to the international pool of knowledge on aircraft noise and its effects. ERCD also works with other internationally recognised organisations to investigate the effects of aircraft emissions.

The DfT represents the UK on the environmental committees of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC), but relies on ERCD for technical support. ERCD provides technical input to projects seeking to harmonise aircraft noise modelling and evaluate the benefits of worldwide aircraft noise reduction options. Noise Monitoring

Noise monitoring work at London airports. Download aircraft sound clips. Find out about our Noise and Track Keeping (NTK) system, which is linked to similar systems at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted. Noise and radar data from the NTK system are used in many of our studies.

Noise Contours

We are highly experienced airport noise modellers and employ the UK civil aircraft noise model ANCON to generate noise contours for the designated London airports, as well as for many UK regional airports.

Noise Effects

We are experts on the effects of noise on people and having assisted Government with many research studies.

There is increasing concern over the environmental impacts arising from pollutants emitted by aircraft engine exhausts.

Complaints about aircraft noise resulting from operations at particular airports or aerodromes should be directed to the airport or aerodrome operator concerned.  This approach is consistent with the policy of successive governments that local problems concerning the environmental impact of aircraft operations should be resolved locally.  However, contact details for more general enquiries about aviation environmental impact or requests for advice and information about particular types of aircraft activity, can be found at the Aviation Related Environmental Enquiries pages.
