Title:Emergency Descent
Description:An amendment to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Regional Supplementary Procedures (Doc 7030/EUR) regarding the procedures to be followed by air traffic controllers when an emergency descent is in progress has recently been approved by ICAO. This change focuses on the controller initiated emergency broadcast, and is complementary to the current UK procedures and RT phraseology (RTF), which were previously introduced to mitigate the potential for aircraft to self initiate dispersal from the area. However, the Doc 7030/EUR change has generated a need for the CAP 493 Manual of Air Traffic Services (MATS) Part 1 procedure to be updated in context, and at the same time, the opportunity has also been taken to further align CAP 493 with legacy Doc 7030/EUR emergency descent procedures.
