Holding a type rating allows you to act as pilot on the type of aeroplane specified in the rating.
You must hold a PPL (A), CPL(A) or ATPL(A) licence and have completed the relevant training and testing as defined in CAP804. Section 4 Part H subpart 1.
If you are the holder of an existing UK issued JAR Flight Crew licence or UK PPL(A), CPL(A) or ATPL(A) which has not already been converted to a Part-FCL licence, then this licensing action will result in the compulsory conversion of your existing licence to a Part-FCL licence.
This will require an additional application form / information which will have to be submitted, and additional requirements may have to be met. As such, please refer to the conversion information available on our website in addition to the information on this page.
- You must complete a training course at an ATO, approved under Part-ORA.
- You must be a student pilot currently undergoing training on an MPL training course or comply with the following requirements:
- have at least 70 hours of flight experience as PIC on aeroplanes;
- hold a multi-engine IR(A);
- have passed the ATPL(A) theoretical knowledge examinations in accordance with this Part; and except when the type rating course is combined with an MCC course:
- hold a certificate of satisfactory completion of an MCC course in aeroplanes; or have at least 500 hours as a pilot in multi-pilot operations on single-pilot multi-engine aeroplanes, in commercial air transport in accordance with the applicable air operations requirements.

- The theoretical knowledge examination shall be written and comprise at least 100 multiple-choice questions distributed appropriately across the main subjects of the syllabus.
- You mustpass a skill test in accordance with Appendix 9 to Part-FCL.
- If you already hold a type rating for an aircraft type, with the privilege for either single-pilot or multipilot operations, you are considered to have already fulfilled the theoretical requirements when applying to add the privilege for the other form of operation on the same aircraft type.
Zero Flight Time Course (ZFTT)
As per CAP804 Section 4 Part H, Subpart 1
- Your medical records must be held by the UK CAA and you must hold a current and valid PART MED medical certificate appropriate to the level of licence held.
- A current and valid Language Proficiency level acceptable to the UK CAA.

- £121.00 for the issue a Multi Pilot Helicopter Type rating onto a licence if holder of a CPL(A) or ATPL(A).
- £89.00 for the issue of a Multi Pilot Helicopter Type rating onto a licence if holder of a PPL(A) being processed by the UK CAA.
Please note that additional fees may apply if this licensing action results in the conversion of your licence and to check the validity of ratings on a PART FCL licence.

Processing time (On receipt of all required information)
We endeavour to process applications in 10 working days from receipt of a fully completed application.
1 year from the date of passing the skills test.

If you are applying on the basis of training and testing being completed by a non UK approved EASA Part FCL Approved Training Organisation we will in addition require a copy of the ATO’s PART ORA approval certificate and a copy of the examiners licence and examiner authorisation certificate and a copy of the current and valid examiner briefing certificate, issued by the UK CAA.
If you are applying on the basis on a Third country ICAO licence conversion we will also require the original Third country ICAO licence and validating medical certificate or a copy certified by Head of Training of an Approved Training Organisation (ATO); or the holder of a registration for a Registered Training Facility (RTF); or an examiner authorised by the CAA

What to expect
- A desk based assessment from a Flight Crew Licensing Officer or Assistant.
- Following an acceptable assessment your licence will be processed signed and despatched.
- We will contact you if we have any queries regarding your application and may keep your application pending while the additional requirements are met.
- An assessment and refund fee may be charged if the UK CAA rejects your application for not meeting all of the requirements. This will also be applied if you choose to cancel your application.
