Revalidate a Multi Pilot Helicopter Type Rating

How to apply


Holding a type rating allows you to act as pilot on the type of helicopter specified in the rating.

To apply for this type rating you must  hold a PPL(H), CPL(H) or ATPL(H) licence and have completed the relevant training and testing as defined in CAP804. Section 4 Part H subpart 2. and a current Helicopter Type rating.

Please note - If you are the holder of an existing UK issued JAR Flight Crew licence or UK PPL(H), CPL(H) or ATPL(HG) which has not already been converted to a Part-FCL licence, then this licensing action will result in the compulsory conversion of your existing licence to a Part-FCL licence.

This will require an additional application form / information which will have to be submitted, and additional requirements may have to be met. As such, please refer to the conversion information available on our website in addition to the information on this page.


You must:

  • Have a current and valid helicopter licence.
  • Have a current helicopter type rating applicable to the type being revalidated. 
  • Pass a proficiency check in accordance with Appendix 9 to Part-FCL in the relevant type of helicopter or an FSTD representing that type within the 3 months immediately preceding the expiry date of the rating; and
  • Complete at least 2 hours as a pilot of the relevant helicopter type within the validity period of the rating. The duration of the proficiency check may be counted towards the 2 hours.

The revalidation of an IR(H), if held, may be combined with a proficiency check.

  • Please ensure that your examiner has met the designation of examiner for skills test for initial issue of Licences, ratings and certificates and Briefing of Non UK examiners requirements, as detailed in information notice IN 2012/153 and IN 2012/156, if applicable

  • Your medical records must be held by the UK CAA and you must hold a current and valid PART MED medical certificate appropriate to the level of licence held.

  • A current and valid Language Proficiency level acceptable to the UK CAA.

Applications made before 1 April 2015

  • £89.00 for the revalidation of a Helicopter Type onto a licence if being processed by the UK CAA.

Applications made from 1 April 2015

  • £88.00 for the revalidation of a Helicopter Type onto a licence if being processed by the UK CAA.

Please note that additional fees may apply if this licensing action results in the conversion of your licence and to check the validity of ratings on a PART FCL licence.

An additional fee will also be payable if you would like your documents to be returned by secure courier.

Processing time (On receipt of all required information)


Validity period

1 year from the date of passing the skills test.

You will need to provide

  • Course Completion Certificate.
  • Payment

If you are applying on the basis of training and testing being completed by a non UK approved EASA Part FCL Approved Training Organisation we will in addition require a copy of the ATO’s PART ORA approval certificate and a copy of the examiners licence and examiner authorisation certificate and a copy of the current and valid examiner briefing certificate, issued by the UK CAA.

If you are applying on the basis on a Third country ICAO licence conversion we will also require the original Third country ICAO licence and validating medical certificate or a copy certified by Head of Training of an Approved Training Organisation (ATO); or the holder of a registration for a Registered Training Facility (RTF); or an examiner authorised by the CAA

How to apply

What to expect

  • A desk based assessment from a Flight Crew Licensing Officer or Assistant.
  • Following an acceptable assessment your licence will be processed signed and despatched.
  • We will contact you if we have any queries regarding your application and may keep your application pending while the additional requirements are met.
  • An assessment and refund fee may be charged if the UK CAA rejects your application for not meeting all of the requirements. This will also be applied if you choose to cancel your application.
