Holding a type rating allows you to act as pilot on the type of aeroplane specified in the rating. You must hold a PPL (A), CPL(A) or ATPL(A) licence and have completed the relevant training and testing as defined in CAP804. Section 4 Part H subpart 1.
If you are the holder of an existing UK issued JAR Flight Crew licence or UK PPL(A), CPL(A) or ATPL(A) which has not already been converted to a Part-FCL licence, then this licensing action will result in the compulsory conversion of your existing licence to a Part-FCL licence.
This will require an additional application form / information which will have to be submitted, and additional requirements may have to be met. As such, please refer to the conversion information available on our website in addition to the information on this page.
- Have a current and valid licence.
- Complete a training course at an ATO approved under Part-ORA
Single-pilot high performance non-complex aeroplanes
Before starting flight training for a first type rating you must:
- have at least 200 hours of total flying experience, of which 70 hours as PIC on aeroplanes; and
- hold a certificate of satisfactory completion of a course for additional theoretical knowledge undertaken at an ATO;
- have passed the ATPL(A) theoretical knowledge examinations in accordance with Part-FCL;
- hold, in addition to a licence issued in accordance with Part-FCL, an ATPL(A) or CPL(A)/IR with theoretical knowledge credit for ATPL(A), issued in accordance with Annex 1 to the Chicago Convention;
You must also have passed the ATPL(A) theoretical knowledge examinations in accordance with this Part
Single-pilot high performance complex aeroplanes
- in addition to meeting the requirements as above you must have fulfilled the requirements for a multi-engine IR(A), as established in Subpart G.
- For single-pilot aeroplanes that are classified as high performance aeroplanes, the examination shall be written and comprise at least 60 multiple-choice questions distributed appropriately across the main subjects of the syllabus.
- You must pass a skill test in accordance with Appendix 9 to Part-FCL.
- Your medical records must be held by the UK CAA and you must hold a current and valid PART MED medical certificate appropriate to the level of licence held.
- A current and valid Language Proficiency level acceptable to the UK CAA.
- £119.00 for the issue of a Type rating onto a licence if you hold a CPL(A) or ATPL(A)
- £88.00 for the issue of a Type rating onto a licence if you hold a PPL(A).
Please note that additional fees may apply if this licensing action results in the conversion of your licence and to check the validity of ratings on a PART FCL licence.

An additional fee will also be payable if you would like your documents to be returned by secure courier.
Processing time (On receipt of all required information)
- We endeavour to process licence applications within 10 working days. Incomplete applications are not subject to the 10 working day turnaround until all application requirements are met.
1 year from the date of passing the skills test.

If you are applying on the basis of training and testing being completed by a non UK approved EASA Part FCL Approved Training Organisation we will in addition require a copy of the ATO’s PART ORA approval certificate and a copy of the examiners licence and examiner authorisation certificate and a copy of the current and valid examiner briefing certificate, issued by the UK CAA.
If you are applying on the basis on a Third country ICAO licence conversion we will also require the original Third country ICAO licence and validating medical certificate or a copy certified by Head of Training of an Approved Training Organisation (ATO); or the holder of a registration for a Registered Training Facility (RTF); or an examiner authorised by the CAA

- A desk based assessment from a Flight Crew Licensing Officer or Assistant.
- Following an acceptable assessment your licence will be processed signed and despatched.
- We will contact you if we have any queries regarding your application and may keep your application pending while the additional requirements are met.
- An assessment and refund fee may be charged if the UK CAA rejects your application for not meeting all of the requirements. This will also be applied if you choose to cancel your application.
