There are many things we look for when researching our holidays how much to pay, where and when to go, full board or self-catering but how many of us think about what happens if our travel company, airline or hotel goes out of business?
Who is responsible for helping us if the worst happens? The ATOL scheme is there for exactly these kinds of situations.
How does it work?
All travel companies in the UK selling flights and accommodation together have to be ATOL protected. It means holidaymakers are covered if the company collapses.
If the company ceases trading before you go away ATOL will make sure you get a full refund; if it collapses while you're away, the scheme will make sure you can continue your trip and return home safely.
Checking your trip is ATOL protected
- Look for the ATOL logo on your travel company's website, brochure or shop front
- Use the “check an ATOL” function on this site - allowing you to check if a travel company really is ATOL protected
- Before you make any payment, check you will receive an ATOL certificate when you book. This confirms what is protected, which company is protecting your trip and what to do if something goes wrong.
You may think it's unlikely anything will happen to your travel company, but every year ATOL supports thousands of holidaymakers.
By simply looking beyond the price and checking your trip is covered, you can have peace of mind that you will not be left out of pocket or stranded abroad - even if your travel company collapses.
